LSPP - Laboratory of simulation of flow processes
Equipment used:
- Physical water model of U.S.Steel Košice, s.r.o. continuous steel casting plant in 3:1 scale,
- Physical water model of the continuous steel casting plant of Železiarne Podbrezová a.s. in scale 2:1,
- Unique physical water model of the crystallizer for continuous steel casting of U.S.Steel Košice, s.r.o. in 1:1 scale
Research projects:
Projects oriented on the field of physical modelling and optimization of steel flow in the intermediate pan and crystallizer of the continuous casting plant, especially current problems of corporate practice and accelerated transfer of research and development results into practice in the form of concrete innovation projects.
SIMET - Laboratory of numerical simulations of metallurgical processes
Equipment and programs used: HP Z4 series high-performance workstations, Ansys FLUENT simulation software
Research projects: projects focusing on numerical simulations of steel flow and metallurgical processes using CFD modelling, numerical simulations of continuous steel casting components with a focus on flow and heat transfer, and linking numerical simulations to physical models and practice.
Laboratory of Microstructural and Spectral Analysis
Equipment used: Q4 POLO spark emission spectrometer, Keyence VHX-X1F Series digital microscopic system.
Research projects: The laboratory focuses on the modern characterization of metallic materials using spectral and microstructural analysis. It enables the precise determination of the chemical composition of metals and alloys using optical emission spectrometry and detailed observation of microstructures, surfaces, and fracture surfaces of materials using high-resolution digital microscopy. The laboratory supports research in the fields of metallurgy, materials engineering, materials quality assessment, and analysis of structural changes during technological processes.
3D PRINT LAB
Equipment used: FDM 3D printers Prusa i3 MK2, Prusa i3 MK3S+, Creality Ender-3 V2; resin 3D printers Prusa SL1, Zortrax Inkspire, Photon Mono 4K; post-processing equipment Prusa CW1 and Zortrax Ultrasonic Cleaner.
Research projects: The laboratory focuses on the use of additive technologies in rapid prototyping, the development of experimental devices, and the creation of teaching models. The combination of filament and resin 3D printing enables the production of precise technical parts and functional models used in research, teaching, and the design of new technological solutions. The laboratory supports digital design, construction, and implementation of modern manufacturing approaches in line with the concepts of digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0.
LTRM - Laboratory for testing the reducibility of materials
Equipment used: RF-33/TV/RDI, LT 75/500/13
Research activities: Projects focusing on the metallurgical properties of ore and non-ore raw materials and the exploitation of hydrogen potential.
LFCHvCM - Laboratory of physico-chemical properties of materials in ferrous metallurgy
Equipment used: Niton™ XL3t GOLDD+ XRF Analyzer, laboratory equipment (balance, dryer, glassware, pycnometers, etc.), Marsh oven, test drum.
Research activities: Projects focused on the evaluation of selected physico-chemical properties of ore and mineral raw materials.
LTGA - Laboratory of thermogravimetric analysis and strength properties
Equipment used: TGA analyzer, FP100 shredder, Marsh furnace, Muffle furnace, analytical balances
Research activities: Projects focused on thermal stability of materials in defined atmosphere, TGA analysis, strength characteristics of samples.
LSPM - Special Model Preparation Laboratory
Equipment used: equipment for the production of thin-walled models, 3D printers
Research activities: Projects focusing on the use of the photosynthetic method for the production of foundry models and the production of castings from these models, as well as projects focusing on 3D printing from various thermoplastics and resins.
CFD classroom
The classroom is used to teach CFD simulations of steel flow and heat transfer processes in metallurgical plants.
Equipment used: High-performance computers for demanding CFD simulations.
Research activities: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) numerical simulations of flow and heat transfer with links to physical models and practice.
LIK - Quality Engineering Laboratory
Equipment used: stylus instrument; DIGIMATIC QM caliper micrometer; two-touch cavity gauge with deflectometer; granite measuring table; granite measuring stand for SJ caliper.
Research activities: Projects focusing on the fundamentals of industrial production measurement with the ability to measure deviations in dimension, orientation, position, throw and surface roughness or to measure and evaluate product attribute properties.
CRELABTE Laboratory
Equipment used: 10 computers - workstations based on AMD Athlon 1600+ processor with connection to the university network.
Research activities: Projects focusing on the areas of final bachelor, diploma and dissertation theses in connection with industrial practice.
